The Armstrong Co Jail is a low/medium-security detention center located at 171 Staley's Court Rd Kittanning, PA which is operated locally by the Armstrong County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Armstrong County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Kittanning Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Pennsylvania here.

The new Armstrong County Jail, the fourth built in the county, was opened in August of 2003. This state of the art facility has a capacity of 158 inmates and grants a safe environment to the Armstrong County community by providing the care and control of the jail's residents.

The existing old Armstrong County Jail was the third built in the county. It was built between 1870 and 1873 by Harrison Brothers. At the time the jail, connected to the Armstrong County Courthouse by an enclosed walkway, was considered one of the strongest, securest and most substantial buildings in the United States. The jail's exterior appearance has been relatively unaltered with its Victorian architecture strongly influenced by Gothic Revival features. Two front-facing towers topped with battlements frame the structure's entrance. The center battlemented tower has recessed carved stonework in the shape of medieval crosses on each side. The windows feature rounded solid concrete arches with elaborate keystones.

  • Any property left by inmates at the jail and not claimed within 30 days will be disposed of.

  • Inmates being transferred to the PA Dept of Corrections may release property prior to transfer; the person picking up the property must show a proper photo I.D. to pick up the property.

Work Release is a privilege for minor offenders who have been sentenced to serve time in jail. This privilege provides the offender with the opportunity to maintain their employment and satisfy his/her financial obligations to the community and their family, while still being held accountable for the sanctions of the Courts with respect to his/her freedom. To apply for work release privileges the offender may ask for a work release application from the Armstrong County Jail staff or this link. After completing the Work Release Application it is to be turned into the Work Release Coordinator along with a money order for $20.00 for the application fee. Please also review, sign and date the Work Release Agreement that accompanies the Work Release Application.
