Located at 201 W Main St in Niantic, CT, York CI carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. York CI offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The York CI, Connecticut's sole facility for female offenders, is a high-security institution serving all superior courts in the state. Regardless of security level, the institution manages both pretrial and sentenced female offenders, providing a comprehensive range of programming aimed at rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.

At the heart of York Correctional Institution's programming is the Marilyn Baker House, an 80-bed intensive, inpatient drug treatment unit offering crucial support for those grappling with substance abuse issues. Additionally, the facility houses an innovative Hospice program, training inmate volunteers to offer end-of-life care to fellow offenders, fostering a culture of compassion and support within the institution.

In recognition of its commitment to offender reintegration, the Charlene Perkins Reentry Center was established in June 2005. Initially dedicated to a former deputy warden, the center evolved into the 'Keys to Success' Community Reintegration Unit in February 2016. This specialized program equips eligible female offenders, within 18 months of release, with the skills and support necessary for a successful transition back into the community.

Beyond rehabilitation-focused initiatives, York Correctional Institution hosts various family-centric programs aimed at maintaining familial bonds and fostering positive relationships. The Mommy and Me program facilitates enhanced family-focused visitation for mothers and their children, while the Girl Scouts Behind Bars initiative provides support for the daughters of incarcerated women, with the aim of reducing recidivism and fostering positive family dynamics.

In addition to its internal programs, the institution actively engages with the broader community through various outreach efforts. Female offenders participate in speaking engagements at schools and local organizations, while community service crews contribute to initiatives such as the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and Camp Hazen.

Furthermore, York Correctional Institution is home to the Second Chance Corral, a unique partnership with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture providing sanctuary for abused farm animals, cared for by the inmate population. This collaborative effort not only promotes animal welfare but also offers offenders opportunities for rehabilitation and responsibility.

The institution's rich history dates back to its foundation as the Connecticut State Farm and Reformatory for Women in 1918, later renamed the Niantic Correctional Institution. Renamed York Correctional Institution in honor of Janet S. York, former warden, the facility underwent various expansions and accolades over the years, including being named Facility of the Year by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care in 2008.

As part of its ongoing commitment to community support and offender rehabilitation, the institution continues to evolve and innovate, ensuring the well-being and successful reintegration of its inmate population.
