Florida State Prison (FSP), commonly known as Raiford Prison, is a prominent correctional institution located in unincorporated Bradford County, with a Starke postal address. Originally designated as the "Florida State Prison-East Unit," it was initially part of the larger Florida State Prison near Raiford, now known as Union Correctional Institution. Established in 1961 and completed in 1968, FSP is a significant facility under the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC).

With a maximum capacity to accommodate 1,460 inmates, FSP stands as one of the largest prisons in the state. It houses one of Florida's two male death row cell blocks and hosts the State of Florida execution chamber. Although Union Correctional Institution also houses male death row inmates, and Lowell Annex houses female death row inmates, FSP remains a central hub for such cases.

In 2000, lethal injection became the standard method of execution at FSP, although inmates can still request the use of the electric chair. Situated amidst several other correctional facilities, FSP is bordered by Union Correctional Institution and is surrounded by New River Correctional Institution, New River O-Unit, and the now-closed FSP West Unit. Despite its proximity to Union Correctional Institution, the county line runs between the two, making Raiford the designated United States Postal Service address city for Union Correctional Institution.

Notably, FSP is the only prison in Florida officially named "prison," with other institutions labeled as "Correctional Institutions" or "Correctional Facilities" if privately contracted. The facility offers various academic programs, including adult basic education, GED programs, and special education services. Chaplaincy services cater to religious needs, providing Bible studies, religious education, and worship services.

Moreover, institutional betterment programs aim to enhance personal development and rehabilitation, offering initiatives such as the 100-Hour Transition Program, Alcoholics Anonymous, anger management, law library access, and wellness education. Through its comprehensive array of programs and services, FSP strives to promote rehabilitation, education, and well-being among its inmate population.

Ask The Inmate

Ask a former inmate questions at no charge.
