Columbus Youth Academy is for State Juvenile offenders have not been sentenced yet and are detained here until their case is heard.

All prisons and jails have Security or Custody levels depending on the inmate’s classification, sentence, and criminal history. Please review the rules and regulations for State juvenile - minimum facility.

The Columbus Youth Academy provides a non-secure residential commitment program for up to 50 males, aged up to 19, who have been adjudicated for sex offenses. The program offers individual, family, and group therapy tailored to address each youth's treatment needs. Upon admission, each youth undergoes evaluation by a psychiatrist for medication management, with monthly follow-up evaluations thereafter if necessary.

The duration of stay at the Columbus YA varies depending on the pace of success in completing the individualized treatment plan and goals.

Academic and career education at the Columbus Youth Academy includes English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading, offered as part of a Type 2 program. Additionally, career and technical opportunities in Culinary Arts are provided. Educational services are provided by the Hillsborough County School District.

For youths in need of extended care under the Department of Juvenile Justice's supervision, residential facilities across Florida offer the necessary support. Placement is determined by the commitment plan, with assistance available from the child's Juvenile Probation Officer (JPO) in identifying the appropriate facility.
