All prisons and jails have Security or Custody levels depending on the inmate’s classification, sentence, and criminal history. Please review the rules and regulations for State - maximum facility.

Located at 2892 Schutt Rd in Burkeville, VA, NCC carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. NCC offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.
Nottoway Correctional Center (NCC), a level 3 close-custody state prison situated in Burkeville, VA, is overseen by the Virginia Department of Corrections. With 63 buildings comprising various units, including single cells, segregation cells, multiple occupancy cells, and dormitories, NCC accommodates inmates in a structured environment. The facility encompasses amenities such as a gymnasium, greenhouses, dining halls, administration offices, classrooms, and a correctional enterprise building where inmates are employed in manufacturing sofas, chairs, and case goods.
Adjacent to the main security fence lies the Nottoway Work Center, a 290-bed minimum-security facility where inmates engage in agricultural work across 290 acres. Both NCC and the work center offer essential medical, dental, and mental health services, along with mandatory schooling for inmates lacking diplomas, covering academic and technical training.
The assignment criteria for NCC and the work center dictate the types of offenders they house, including considerations for security levels, sentence durations, and behavioral history. NCC also serves as a reception and classification facility, processing inmates from local jails into the Department and housing inmates of various security levels.
Furthermore, the Virginia state prison system delivers an array of programs and services to its incarcerated population, aiming to occupy inmate time constructively, reduce unrest, and foster positive growth. These programs span treatment planning, core programs like substance abuse treatment and mental health services, vocational training, and life skills programming, all geared towards promoting positive prison adjustment and reducing recidivism rates. Additionally, other programs tailored to specific inmate needs, such as behavior management, women offender support, anger management, geriatric care, and victim services, further contribute to the rehabilitation and well-being of inmates within the state correctional system.
NCC maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
Apply for Visitation - Submit a visitation application online if you are a new visitor or renewing your visitation privileges.
Schedule a Visit - Once you receive approval to visit an inmate in a VADOC facility, you must schedule your visit online using the Visitation Scheduler. If you are a new user, you must first register using the “Register Today” option.
Prepare for Your Scheduled Visit - Once you have both applied for visitation and scheduled your visit, please review the following information to help you prepare for your in-person visit.
Plan - Please arrive at the facility one hour before your visit for security screening. No food or drinks will be allowed in the facility, and there will be no access to vending machines.
