I've heard that if you find yourself doing time of over a year or more in jail that you almost have to join a prison gang to survive... What is your take on this and do you have any pointers?

It depends largely on where they are doing their time. In some cases this is the way of survival but it is not the "rule". Inmates can survive long stretches without joining any gang. The best pointers we can give is, ONE: Do not gamble, TWO: Do not offer your opinion, THREE: Respect another's space, FOUR: Do not butt in line, FIVE: Do not stray alone outside the eyesight of the correctional officers, SIX: Never get into a position where you owe another inmate money, SEVEN: Do not do drugs or smoke, and most importantly - get a job and stay in a routine to help your time pass. If you heed these things, you will not have a reason to get into conflict and more than likely will never run into an issue. But this is easier said than done because there will be challenges from time-to-time. You have to use your head and remain aware of your surroundings and use your smarts to avoid trouble.
