What is Lucille Plane prison like?

Lucile Plane State Jail is a jail for women located four miles north of Dayton TX on FM 686 off Hwy 321. Plane State was the first jail in the state designated to house only women with a capacity is 2,276 female inmates. The facility is run by Sr. Warden Maricia Jackson overseeing 418 employees. The jail is located on shared land with Hightower Prison Unit and Henley State Jail.  

In 2015, Lucile Plane State Jail was involved in a highly publisized legal dispute which argued the facility was not providing humane care for inmates and lacked medical services.  A Federal Judge ordered the Texas Department of Criminal Justice(TDCJ) to install air conditioning and provide adequate medical support.

Inmates at Lucille Plane undergo substance abuse testing and assessments.  Offenders who have a criminal history of drugs and alcohol may be placed in the State Jail Substance Abuse Treatment Program or Our Roadway to Freedom progran.  Inmates can work in a variety of positions within the facility providing laundry services to the jail and to nearby Henley State Jail.  Select inmates can work in the facilities garden, and in caring for security canines and horses.  

During an offenders incarceration at Plane State Jail, they are encouraged to participate in educational programs that may benefit them, such as literacy (Adult Basic Education/GED), Reading, Title I, CHANGES/Pre-Release, Cognitive Intervention, Parenting Seminar as well as learning new employment skills in the vocational programs offered like Career and Technology Programs: Business Computer Information Systems II; Landscape Design, Construction and Maintenance; Construction Carpentry.  Plane State Jail provides Ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health services. Digital Medical Services (DMS), OB/GYN and mammography specialty care clinics, and electronic specialty care clinics available. All services on a single level, including CPAP accommodating housing.
