The Ouachita River Unit serves as an intake and classification facility for the Arkansas Department of Corrections, located in Malvern, AR. Housing 1,782 inmates, ranging from minimum to medium custody, most inmates spend only a short duration here for classification before being transferred to more permanent facilities. Due to this transient nature, visitation is often not feasible.
Despite its temporary status for inmates, the Ouachita River Unit offers a range of services aimed at rehabilitation and skill-building. These include substance abuse education, programs targeting the reduction of sexual victimization for sex offenders, and special needs programs. Inmates also have the opportunity to work with animals through the Paws program, which contributes to their rehabilitation. Educational opportunities such as earning a GED and basic adult education are available, alongside vocational programs. Inmates can engage in various jobs, including laundry processing and construction.
Operational activities at the Ouachita River Unit encompass agriculture initiatives focusing on cow/calf and forage production, hay operations, and garden operations. Other programs and services include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)/Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Programs, Central Male Intake, Construction, Dog Kennel Operations, the Faith-Based Principles and Applications for Life (PAL) Program, GED Program in partnership with the Central Arkansas Baptist Bible Institute, Hobby Craft, Inmate Council, Special Needs Unit, Reduction of Sexual Victimization Program (RSVP), Regional Maintenance, Residential Program Unit – Habilitation, Think Legacy Program, Reentry Program, and the Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (WAGE) Program. These initiatives aim to support inmate rehabilitation, education, and successful reintegration into society.
