Located in Thomson, Illinois, the Federal Correctional Institution, Thomson (FCI Thomson) spans approximately 146 acres and comprises 15 buildings. The facility boasts eight cell houses, providing a total capacity of 2,100 beds. These beds cater to both low-security and minimum-security inmates, including those housed at the onsite satellite camp (SCP).

In October 2012, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) finalized the acquisition of Thomson Correctional Center from the State of Illinois for a sum of $165 million. Originally, there were plans to repurpose the facility for the transfer of inmates from Guantanamo Bay. However, these plans were thwarted by Congressional restrictions, preventing the realization of this initiative. As of 2023, FCI Thomson currently incarcerates 1149 inmates within its low-security sector and an additional 112 inmates at the minimum-security camp, with inmates housed in two-person cells.

USP Thomson has been home to several notable inmates, including rapper Kodak Black, Christopher Jeburk, Daron Wint, and Mohamud Salad Ali, each serving sentences for various offenses ranging from illegal firearm activities to kidnapping and murder.

Health services at USP Thomson prioritize the well-being of inmates, with new arrivals undergoing comprehensive physical examinations within 14 days of admission. The Health Services Unit operates as an ambulatory outpatient clinic staffed by a dedicated team of medical professionals, offering medical and dental sick calls, emergency treatments, preventive healthcare services, chronic care management, medication provisions, and eyeglass support. Additionally, inmates have access to infectious disease screenings, subject to compliance with institutional protocols.

Psychology services at USP Thomson play a crucial role in addressing inmates' mental health needs, with new arrivals and those previously identified with such needs undergoing interviews with Psychology Services staff. Residential mental health programs are available for inmates grappling with severe emotional, cognitive, and behavioral challenges, aimed at enhancing their daily functioning and facilitating successful reintegration or preventing the need for hospitalization.

While USP Thomson nor the SCP do not host a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), inmates can be referred to institutions offering such programs. However, a drug abuse education course and the Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program (NR-DAP) are available to address substance abuse issues.

Education services at USP Thomson encompass literacy, GED, and ESL programs, alongside parenting classes and Adult Continuing Education (ACE) courses. Inmates are incentivized for satisfactory progress and program completions, with graduation ceremonies recognizing achievements in various educational endeavors. High school diplomas and post-secondary programs are accessible through paid correspondence programs.

Library services provide inmates with access to legal materials via the TRULINCS Electronic Law Library, facilitating legal research and document preparation. Leisure libraries offer a diverse array of reading materials, including periodicals, newspapers, fiction, nonfiction, and reference books, further supporting educational and recreational pursuits.

In essence, USP Thomson stands as a beacon of security and rehabilitation, offering comprehensive services aimed at promoting the well-being and development of its inmate population while upholding institutional safety and security standards.
