The Federal Correctional Institution, Estill (FCI Estill) is a low-security United States federal prison for male inmates in South Carolina. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. It also has an adjacent satellite camp for minimum-security female offenders (which was transitioned from all-male in June 2023). FCI Estill is located approximately 50 miles north of Savannah, Georgia, 96 miles west of Charleston, and 95 miles south of the state capital, Columbia. At the FCI, the inmates are housed in two and three-person cells. Camp inmates are housed in dormitories, which are divided into two-person pods.

Inmates arriving at FCI Estill receive an initial medical screening during intake. Medical and dental sick call, routine sick call visits, medication, medical emergencies, eyeglasses, medically indicated footwear, and routine physical examinations are also provided. Emergency medical care is available 24 hours a day. Psychology services include intake screenings, crisis intervention, and group counseling. Regular treatment groups include criminal thinking and anger management. FCI Estill and the camp do not house a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), but inmates can be transferred to institutions that offer the program. Both facilities offer a Drug Education class, the Non-Residential Drug Treatment Program (NR-DAP), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

FCI Estill provides literacy, GED, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) programs, and pre-release training programs. Parenting and Adult Continuing Education (ACE) programs are also available. Twice a year a graduation ceremony is scheduled for education classes (GED and ESL), as well as vocational occupation classes. Certificates and $25 are awarded for successful completion and participation. Achievement incentives, such as commissary-type items are also given. Additional dollar incentives of $5 are given out for achieving a basic literacy level, and those who achieve a score of 500 or higher in each subject area of the practice GED examination are given $10. High school diplomas and post-secondary programs are available through paid correspondence programs.

FCI Estill offers advanced occupational education in Manage First, Carpentry, Electrical, and Welding. The FCI and the Camp offer apprenticeships in Baking, Cooking, Electrical, Housekeeping, HVAC, and Welding.

Inmates can access a leisure and law library at both facilities. The law library contains the TRULINCS Electronic Law Library, typewriters, and a copy machine. The leisure library allows inmates to check out fiction and nonfiction books, newspapers, and magazines. The law library schedule is posted in the Education building.

Inmates at FCI Estill are permitted to spend up to $360.00 each month for regular and special purchases. Here is a list and prices of items sold at the commissary in FCI Estill. Stamps, over-the-counter medicine, copy cards, TRULINCS units, and phone time are excluded from this spending limitation. Ice cream, food, beverages, electronics, clothing, and shoes can be purchased in the commissary.

Inmates have access to a recreation yard, a hobby craft program, sports and musical equipment, wellness classes, and a photo program. Table games, tournaments, and league events are available. Intramural team sports in softball, basketball, and volleyball are also available. The hobby craft area is located in the recreation leisure center. Classes are taught for leather, art, drawing, beadwork, and crochet. The Recreation Department is open seven days a week.

Ask a former inmate questions at no charge.
