FPC Yankton is a minimum-security federal prison for adult male inmates operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, situated on the former campus of Yankton College. Converted to a prison in 1988, it lacks fences, razor wire, or guard towers, contributing to its reputation as one of the "cushiest prisons in America."

Despite its relaxed atmosphere, FPC Yankton offers various educational opportunities for white-collar inmates, including classes in accounting, business administration, and business management. The facility houses a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) and offers drug abuse programs such as CHOICES, a Drug Abuse Education course, and the Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program (NR-DAP).

Notable inmates have included former Mormon Bishop Shawn Merriman and film director John McTiernan, who was released in February 2014.

The Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook provides general information about the institution, programs, rules, and regulations to help inmates adjust to institutional life.

In terms of commissary services, inmates may spend up to $360 per month on commissary items. Funds deposited by family, friends, or other sources are stored in the inmate's commissary account. A list of items and their prices available at the FPC Yankton commissary is provided for inmates' reference.
