Located at 40 Howard Ave in Cranston, RI, Maximum Security carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Maximum Security offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The Maximum Security Facility (MAX), operational since 1878, follows the Auburn style of construction, housing all inmate cells in one main building. Initially serving both awaiting trial and sentenced inmates, MAX evolved as the prison system's needs changed, necessitating the addition of other facilities.

With a bed capacity of 466, MAX houses inmates serving various sentence lengths for different offenses. It also accommodates those transferred from other facilities due to serious disciplinary or behavioral issues. Inmates participate in rehabilitative programs to prepare for classification to lower security levels.

Around 190 inmates at Maximum Security are employed across various functions within the institution, including kitchen, laundry, barber shop, library, and as porters. Additionally, there are roles in the industries area, which includes a print shop and carpenter shop.

MAX is fortified by a wall with observation towers and a double chain-link security fence, equipped with electronic intrusion detection systems to prevent and detect escape attempts. The facility comprises six housing areas, a disciplinary confinement unit, kitchen/dining area, recreation yard, education/gym building, and an industries area.

As of FY22, MAX's average population stands at 312, while its operational capacity is set at 422 inmates.
