SCI Rockview is a medium-security state prison housing around 2,400 adult male inmates across 103 structures, including 14 housing units featuring multi-occupancy cells and dormitory-style housing. Notably, Rockview administers capital punishment to all-male offenders given the death penalty. The facility participates in the Correctional Industries program, employing inmates in a wood furniture factory.
Originally planned as a maximum-security prison to replace Western Penitentiary, Rockview evolved into a medium-security institution in the 1920s. It operates as a branch or farm prison by the Western Penitentiary. The site conducts executions, reintroduced in Pennsylvania in 1978, with 350 executions performed by electrocution. In 1990, lethal injection replaced the electric chair, leading to the renovation of the old hospital building into an execution complex.
Covering 35.042 acres inside the perimeter and 4,268.88 acres outside, Rockview hosts a population with an average age of 44.61. The facility employs 715 full-time staff and offers academic education up to GED level. Vocational education includes HVAC, barber school, business education, masonry, and more, with industry-recognized certifications.
Inmate programs address family relationships, re-entry preparation, substance abuse, offense-related interventions, and mental health support. The Pennsylvania Correctional Industries Wood Furniture Factory, operational since February 2008, services state agencies and non-profit organizations.
The Community Work Program provides assistance to various entities such as the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), non-profit organizations, other correctional facilities, and federal and local governments.
SCI Rockview maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
In-person visitation is available at all DOC facilities. Some visiting rules have changed, so please be sure to read this entire page and check out the updated Visiting Rules page, as well as the Visitor Guide before scheduling an in-person visit with an incarcerated loved one. This page also contains instructions on how to schedule a no-cost video visit.
All in-person visits must be scheduled online at least three days in advance.
Video visitation is a free service offered to inmates and authorized visitors. All inmates are eligible to participate. Rules for video visits are generally the same as those for in-person visits at a facility. All non-legal video visits are monitored and recorded.
