SSCF, a Central Level male facility with 370 beds, commenced construction in 2002 and began operations as Vermont’s newest facility on October 6th, 2003. With a current allotment of 146 state employee positions, SSCF relies on contracted staff for medical, mental health, dental, and other program services. Spanning over 27 acres, the campus-style institution comprises six buildings, including the core facility, inmate housing units, and specialized units for medical and mental health care. SSCF also houses a close-custody unit for disruptive inmates and serves as a detention center for Orange, Windham, Windsor, and parts of Bennington County, accepting detainees from local, county, and state law enforcement.

One notable aspect of SSCF is its affiliation with the Community High School of Vermont (CHSV), one of 16 campuses. Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEAS&C), CHSV provides educational opportunities for inmates, furthering our commitment to facilitating positive change and successful reintegration into society.
