Individuals under probation, parole, or community corrections supervision must obtain approval from both their supervising officer and the superintendent before visiting, although such visits are not typically approved.

General Visitation Information

All new visitation applications and renewals must be submitted online. Paper applications will not be accepted. If internet access is unavailable, individuals can visit their local public library to apply online. For the Virginia Public Library Directory, visit the Library of Virginia’s Website.

Approval for visiting multiple offenders is limited to immediate family members only. Non-immediate family members, including fiancées/fiancés, girlfriends, boyfriends, neighbors, cousins, and friends, are restricted to visiting one offender. All visitor applications expire after 36 months, requiring submission of a new application at least 30 days before expiration for uninterrupted visitation.

The Virginia Department of Corrections conducts annual record checks on visitors, and prior approval does not guarantee continuation. Processing time for online applications is typically 30 days, while out-of-state applicants should allow up to 90 days. Accuracy and completeness are crucial to avoid processing delays. Approved visitors must present valid photo identification matching the application details.

Visitors aged 65 or older or those with visual impairments can contact AFOI for assistance with the application process. However, AFOI cannot provide application status information; for updates, contact VADOC Visitor Registration at (804) 887-8341.

Visitation is permitted on Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays, with specific days varying by institution. Visitors should confirm visiting days with the facility, as some institutions alternate visitation days based on alphabetical order or offender ID number. Offenders are entitled to a minimum of one hour per visiting day, with visit duration subject to various factors.

Each institution may have different visitation procedures subject to change without prior notice. It is advisable to contact the facility before planning a visit for updated information on their visiting program.

All visitors, including children, must adhere to dress regulations. Proper attire must cover from the neck to the kneecaps, including appropriate footwear and underwear. Prohibited clothing includes tube tops, mini-skirts, see-through garments, and clothing with inappropriate symbols or language. Visitors deemed inappropriately dressed will be referred to the Administrative Duty Officer for final decision on admission.

Work release programs oversee the adults under correctional supervision in this jurisdiction who have the trust of the facility administration where they are permitted to work in the community sector working regular jobs. Administered by agencies or courts with enforcement authority, these programs facilitate the transition of individuals back into the community post-incarceration, a process often fraught with limited job opportunities— this support forms integral aspects of these programs, aiming to address these hurdles. Corrections officials collaborate with community facilities both county-owned and privately contracted facilities to tailor supervision and services to individuals' needs, facilitating successful reentry.

Digital technology presents community corrections officials with innovative tools to monitor individuals on probation or parole, aiding their compliance and progress. Enhanced communication channels between supervisors and offenders are facilitated through smartphone-based video, text, or instant messaging. These technologies strengthen communication lines, enabling efficient supervision and ensuring individuals fulfill their legal obligations.

You must get approval before scheduling a visit, please call 540-337-1818 for detailed instructions.
