The Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction inaugurated in 2001, stands as a modern correctional facility spanning 160,000 square feet across 25 acres at 467 Cheshire Road in Pittsfield. Featuring 288 cells distributed evenly among eight two-tiered housing units or pods, the facility boasts a total inmate capacity of approximately 500.
A departure from the linear cell blocks of its predecessor on Second Street, the new facility adopts a pod design. Each pod comprises two tiers of cells encircling a common day room, alongside essential amenities such as an officer's station, counseling rooms, and an office. Furthermore, each pod extends a recreation deck.
Marking a transition "from Civil War to Star Wars," this state-of-the-art facility represents a significant advancement in correctional infrastructure, employing cutting-edge security technology to supersede the outdated Second Street jail, originally erected in 1870 by Civil War veterans. Despite its century-long service, the antiquated building succumbed to overcrowding and proved inadequate to meet the evolving needs of a burgeoning inmate population, operating for years at double its intended capacity.
The Berkshire Jail and House of Correction prioritizes education and treatment programs aimed at facilitating inmate rehabilitation upon release. These initiatives encompass classroom and vocational education, job skills assessment and training, as well as substance abuse counseling and treatment, embodying a commitment to empowering individuals toward self-improvement.
