The CT DOC-Manson Youth Institution is within the jurisdiction of the Connecticut Department of Juvenile Justice located at 42 Jarvis St, Cheshire, CT.

The facility provides supervision of youth in a safe, secure and humane environment. Services for youth include education, mental health, substance abuse, and health care. Medical and mental health are contracted services. Educational services are funded by the Connecticut Department of Education through local school districts.

A typical day in secure detention would involve hygiene, meals, school, structured physical and educational activities, and court appearance as scheduled. The average length of stay in secure state detention is approximately 60 days.

The Manson Youth Institution stands as a beacon of rehabilitation and youth development within Connecticut's correctional landscape. As a level 4 high-security facility, it serves as the Department's primary destination for housing sentenced inmates under the age of 21, recognizing the unique needs and challenges faced by young offenders. Named in honor of John R. Manson, a distinguished figure in the Department's history, who served as Commissioner from 1971-1983, the institution embodies a commitment to fostering positive change and growth among its youthful population.

Situated on 76 acres, the Manson Youth Institution comprises ten separate buildings, each meticulously designed to provide a conducive environment for education, rehabilitation, and personal development. From chronic disciplinary inmates to those in need of mental health support, the institution caters to a diverse range of needs, offering specialized programs and services to address them comprehensively.

In response to the growing young population, the institution established a pioneering youthful offender mentoring program, emphasizing the cultivation of positive peer relationships, life skills development, and effective release planning. Through educational, vocational, and addiction services programs, inmates are empowered to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for successful reintegration into society as productive, law-abiding citizens.

The Manson Youth Institution's commitment to holistic rehabilitation is reflected in its comprehensive facilities, including the Health Education & Training (H.E.T.) building, inaugurated in 1994. This state-of-the-art facility houses classrooms, vocational education programs, a library, medical and mental health facilities, and recreational amenities, providing inmates with access to essential resources for personal and academic growth.

In-person social visits and Video Visits are available by appointment ONLY. The adult general population inmates are now allowed 2 visits per week to include a maximum of 1 visit per weekend. The juvenile population will continue to have the opportunity for up to 5 visits weekly to include 1 maximum on the weekend. In-person and Video visits are for 1 hour within the scheduled time slot.

Visitors must be on the approved, active visiting list. Note: An In-Person or Video visit is not scheduled until you receive confirmation from the facility. Check your junk mail folder for confirmations or emails regarding visits. Appropriate Attire Required - Rules/Information

Visits are scheduled according to the inmate's housing location. If an inmate moves to another housing location, the visit will be canceled and needs to be rescheduled. It is the inmate’s responsibility to notify the visitor that their visit will need to be rescheduled. Any individual who attempts to visit a facility will not be accommodated.
