The Lucas County Holding Facility is a detention center located at 48559 Hy Vee Rd Chariton, IA which is operated locally by the Lucas County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Lucas County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Chariton Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Inmates are held up to 24 hours and, if not released, will be transported to be held in another county. If you have mittimus time to serve, you must come to the Sheriff's Office and sign Housing & Restitution paperwork, prior to serving your time. At that time, you will be given further instructions on how to set up your service in another county.
