Located at 1650 MS-492 in Walnut Grove, MS, WGCF carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. WGCF offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.
Established in 1990, Walnut Grove Correctional is situated on 72 acres of land, with an additional 27 acres adjacent to the main facility grounds, located in the small town of Walnut Grove in southern Leake County, which has a population of approximately 1,675 residents. Initially operated by private companies from 1996 to 2016, the facility underwent significant changes during this period. Originally designated to house youthful offenders from 1996 to 2012, the facility's mission shifted in 2012 to accommodate adult offenders until its closure in 2016.
After a period of closure, the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) took the initiative to reopen WGCF in November 2021. With a renewed purpose, the facility now has the capacity to house up to 1,496 inmates. Beyond its role in providing custodial services, WGCF has evolved to offer a range of re-entry programs aimed at facilitating the successful transition of inmates back into society. These programs include comprehensive alcohol and drug rehabilitation initiatives, vocational training opportunities designed to equip inmates with practical skills for employment upon release, and robust security threat group management strategies to ensure a safe environment within the facility.
The decision to reopen WGCF reflects the state's commitment to addressing its correctional needs while also focusing on rehabilitation and reintegration efforts. By offering a blend of programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of its inmate population, the facility aims to foster positive behavioral changes, reduce recidivism rates, and ultimately contribute to safer communities. Moreover, the reopening of WGCF signifies a strategic investment in the rehabilitation and successful reintegration of individuals within the criminal justice system, aligning with broader efforts to promote public safety and support the rehabilitation journey of those in custody.
WGCF maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
