Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The SDWP, situated within the Solem Public Safety Center, stands as a multifaceted facility encompassing various state corrections and law enforcement entities. Originating from legislation introduced in 1995, which sanctioned the construction of a new women's prison in Pierre, the concept evolved to integrate resources from local governments for optimal utilization of the new establishment.

The completed Solem Public Safety Center features the state Women's Prison as its cornerstone, along with the Central Office of the state Department of Corrections, Pierre Police Department, Hughes County Sheriff's Office, a State Highway Patrol station, and agents from the State Division of Criminal Investigation. Predominantly occupying the 78,000-square-foot structure, the Women's Prison constitutes a significant portion of the facility.

On October 23, 1997, the South Dakota Women's Prison officially commenced operations, marking a milestone in the state's corrections infrastructure. Nearby lies the Pierre Minimum Center, situated within the former DCI Training Academy premises, serving as a residence for minimum-security offenders engaged in work release programs.

Prison Industries within the Women's Prison encompass diverse endeavors, including an embroidery shop catering to institutional needs. Furthermore, Badlands Quilting, a private-sector prison industry, operates within the Women's Prison premises, contributing to both vocational training and revenue generation.

An integral offering of the Women's Prison is the Mother-Infant program, available to eligible offenders, providing specialized support and resources for incarcerated mothers and their infants. Guided by specific policies and protocols, the program aims to facilitate maternal bonding and childcare within the correctional setting, promoting family stability and rehabilitation.
