Located at 3649 Lower Newton Rd in Swanton, VT, NWSCF carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. NWSCF can accommodate up to 377 inmates and was established in 1969. Over the years, it has housed both male and female inmates but presently functions as a detention facility for inmates awaiting trial, alongside housing long-term commitments. The facility is part of a group of institutions facing the need for significant repairs due to its age, highlighting the importance of ongoing maintenance and infrastructure improvements.
Various programs are available here to inmates aimed at promoting rehabilitation and addressing underlying issues. One such program is the cognitive self-change program, designed to modify inmates' behavioral patterns and promote positive decision-making skills. Additionally, the facility offers mental health services and sex offender treatment programs to address the diverse needs of its inmate population and provide essential support for recovery and reintegration.
Beyond its inmate programs, NWSCF has made strides in environmental sustainability, notably by meeting Vermont's Recycling of Solid Waste law ahead of schedule. Through an innovative program, the facility sorts recyclables and organic matter from its waste stream, with organic materials being composted and plastics, metals, and paper goods recycled. This initiative not only benefits the environment by reducing waste but also yields significant cost savings in disposal expenses, demonstrating the facility's commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible resource management.
In addition to its general population units, the facility also houses a segregation unit and a close-custody unit, reflecting its ability to manage different security levels within its operations.
