Located at 11264 Ohio River Rd in West Columbia, WV, Lakin Correctional Center carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Lakin Correctional Center (LCC) is a maximum-security state correctional facility that houses custody levels ranging from minimum to maximum and is the only all-female prison in West Virginia. LCC has a current capacity of 543 inmates.

The land on which LCC sets were donated to the State in the early 1920’s by a local family. A cemetery located behind the facility was the family cemetery of the people who donated the property. In 1926, Lakin State Hospital was built on the land where LCC is now located. In order to build LCC, the hospital buildings were torn down, with the exception of the activities building, which was incorporated into the prison as the gymnasium. Phase I construction of LCC began in February 1999 and was completed in August 2002. The main facility was dedicated on September 25, 2002 and received it first inmates on January 29, 2003. Phase II construction of LCC, consisting of a 124-bed dormitory-style housing unit, a 36-bed modular style housing unit and a Correctional Industries Building, began in June 2005 and was completed in October 2006. Phase II was dedicated on November 16, 2006 and began housing inmates on January 09, 2007.

The Department of Education provides many educational and vocational programs for the inmate population such as ABE/GED, Life Skills, Business Education, Culinary Arts, Facilities Maintenance and Horticulture/Landscaping. Correctional Industries operates a garment, sewing and embroidery factory and manufactures inmate clothing, linens and office chairs.

LCC inmates holding an appropriate security classification provide community service to various agencies/charitable organizations throughout Mason County.

All visitors are required to bring to the front lobby a vehicle registration for the vehicle that they arrive in. Positive identification of all visitors is required. Visitors 18 years of age must provide a valid government issued photo identification when necessary to make a positive identification.
IDENTIFICATION
All minor children must be accompanied by their parent of legal guardian who will provide the child’s original birth certificate for proof of identification. If anyone other than the parent of legal guardian wishes to bring a child into LCC they must provide, in addition to the birth certificate, a notarized permission slip signed by the parent or guardian giving permission for the visit to take place. Any adult escorting a child for visitation must also be able on the inmate’s approved visiting list.
FEMALE DRESS CODE
All female visitors to the facility are required to wear suitable, modest clothing, which includes undergarments.

All male visitors to the facility are required to wear suitable, modest clothing, which includes undergarments.

All visitors will have their person searched. Everyone must clear the magnometer with no exceptions other than a verified medical reason with letter of conformation from a physician. Refusal to comply WILL result in immediate denial of admittance
NUMBER OF VISITORS
No more than three visitors at a time. Minor children count against the total.
PHYSICAL CONTACT
Offenders and visitors may embrace and kiss briefly upon arrival and departure. Offenders and visitors may hold hands but shall sit across from one another in the assigned chairs. Hands must be in plain sight at all times. Sexual stimulation or activity is strictly prohibited. Breast feeding is prohibited. Inmates and visitors are not to sit on each other’s laps or between each other’s legs, with the exception of small children. Excessive contact will result in denial or termination of visit.
SEATING ARRANGEMENT
Visitation staff shall assign a table for visitors. NO visitor or offender will visit another table for any reason. Parents or guardians will maintain control of their children at all times.
SMOKING
Tobacco products are not authorized anywhere in the Correctional Center
RESTROOMS
It is strongly suggested that all guest use the facility restrooms located in the lobby area prior to entering the visiting room.
