Former NFL Player Alonzo Spellman released from Tulsa Jail

By Bill Braun World Staff Writer  -   6/18/2012

Former NFL defensive lineman Alonzo Spellman received a one-year sentence Monday that entitled him to be released from the Tulsa Jail.

Spellman, 40, pleaded no contest to 10 counts related to three Tulsa County cases filed in 2008.

The counts involve two felonies — eluding a police officer and assault with a dangerous weapon — plus misdemeanor counts of obstructing an officer, unlawfully carrying a weapon, eluding, resisting an officer, speeding, driving without a license, public intoxication and possession of a controlled drug, records show.

Tulsa County District Judge William Kellough found Spellman guilty and sentenced him to one year in jail, but he gave Spellman credit for time already served and ordered him released, records show.

Spellman was released from jail shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, records show.

Lawyers indicated that he is expected to move to another state.

A resolution of Spellman’s cases was delayed by mental competency issues.

Spellman is a former first-round draft pick out of Ohio State University. He played for the Chicago Bears, the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions, finishing his NFL career in 2001.

His attorney, David Phillips, has said previously that Spellman has a mental illness.
