Nancy Grace interviews inmates who live with Jodi Arias

By HLNtv.com Staff  -  Mon June 03, 2013

Located five and a half miles from downtown Phoenix, Arizona, is the Estrella Women’s Jail. The correctional facility is home to nearly 1,000 female inmates, including convicted murderer Jodi Arias.

Former prosecutor Nancy Grace went to the Estrella Jail and spoke with six female inmates like the ones she once locked away. The women opened up about their fellow inmate, Jodi Arias.

Arias stood trial in Phoenix this year for the June 2008 murder of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander. The case made headlines after Arias took the witness stand for 18 days and testified that she killed Alexander in self-defense.

Alexander’s roommate discovered his dead body in the shower of his Mesa, Arizona home. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the face, 29 stab wounds and a slashed throat.

A jury found Arias guilty of first-degree murder on May 8. During the penalty phase of her trial, Judge Sherry Stephens declared a mistrial because the jury could not reach a unanimous decision about whether Arias should live or die. The new penalty phase is scheduled to begin on July 18 with a new jury.

Before Arias was found guilty of first-degree murder, her fellow inmates at the Estrella Jail discussed the trial and what they think about the now convicted murderer.

“Whatever happened back then, that had her mind corrupted like that, I’ll never know. But she’s an amazing woman, she really is,” burglary suspect Angelina Key told Grace.

Nancy Grace: Have you all been watching the trial?

“It’s all over the newspaper,” Key said.

Nancy Grace: Do you think she should have taken the stand?

“No, she should not have. She incriminated herself,” Key added.

Nancy Grace: Has anybody come into contact with her in jail?

“She likes to sing,” said Rosa Leon, a pregnant mother accused of first-degree aggravated assault.

“Yeah, she sings really good,” added accused murderer Stephanie Conley.

“She’s an amazing person,” Key said.

Nancy Grace: Why do you say she’s an amazing person?

“Because she is. For all I know, it could be a façade because she’s in here,” Key said.

Nancy Grace: Jodi Arias takes on the personality of what she thinks you want her to be like, and she’s said as much on the stand. She would be like a chameleon. So I’m just very interested in what she projects behind bars.

“I’ve never talked to her because I just look at her from a distance. I’ve never really cared for her. I don’t know her,” said accused kidnapper Fina Dean.

Nancy Grace: That’s interesting that you’ve never cared for her. Why do you say that?

“I don’t know her so I don’t really care. A woman does not just go to the man you love and just totally do some crazy outrageous stuff,” Dean said.

Nancy Grace: Well, Travis Alexander was going with another woman to Cancun.

“That’s nothing. I mean, who knows what really happened,” Dean responded.

Nancy Grace: I know, but why did she have to stab Travis Alexander nine times in the back?

“She was angry,” Key said.

“Nobody knows the real story though. Nobody does. Only God and her and the man that’s dead,” said Dean.
