  • Community Alternatives of the Black Hills (CABH) opened its doors in January 1992 as a minimum security correctional facility for inmates from the South Dakota Department of Corrections.
  • In 1996, CABH entered into its first contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and also began providing services to the United States Probation and Pre-Trial Services Office.
  • In 1998, CABH placed a second building on the property which included additional office space and a large classroom.
  • In 2006, a new facility was constructed and in October of 2007, CABH residents and staff occupied their new building on an adjacent property, immediately to the south of the old facility.


  • During the intake process, the Case Manager reviews and evaluates the resident's record and obtains other pertinent information relative to designing a reentry treatment plan, called an Individual Program Plan (IPP).
  • CABH offers parenting classes, life skills training, courses on financial management and how to obtain housing and transportation, stress management, and anger management and communication skills are included the life skills programming.
  • CABH offers a wide range of support groups including Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the Native American support group Wiconi Wableza. The residents of CABH have also developed a Lakota language and culture class.
  • CABH also offers FRESH (Facing Re-entry Effectively, Safely and Honestly), which is a peer-to-peer support group that allows residents to assist each other with the problems they face as they prepare to reenter their communities.
  • CABH also offers a specialized support group for our female population, WISE, (Women Becoming Independent, Self-Sufficient and Empowered) that offers female offenders a safe place to learn and practice new skills.

No cellphones, you will be searched before visiting. NO personal belongings. Persons under probation, parole, or other community corrections supervision must obtain the permission of both their individual supervising officer and the superintendent prior to a visit. Such visitation is not normally approved.

If the visitor is under the age of 18 and is a family member of the inmate, they must be accompanied by an adult family member or guardian to include a member of the inmate's extended family. If the visitor is under the age of 18 and is not a family member of the inmate, the minor visitor must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
