Accompanied by a nearby minimum-security prison camp, the complex houses a total of 1,700 male prisoners, with 1,400 inmates at the penitentiary and 400 at the camp. Originally designated as a maximum-security facility, USP Leavenworth transitioned to a medium-security prison in 2005, although it still retains its significance as the largest maximum-security federal prison in the United States.
