General Visitation Information

Hampton Roads Regional Jail - Visitation

Visitation with family and friends is conducted in non-contact visitation booths located on the upper floor of each housing unit. Please keep in mind that visits (and access to the visitation area) are scheduled as visitors arrive (first come, first served). Contact visitation rooms are available in the same area for meetings with attorneys.

Visitation Rules and Regulations - Inmates are allowed one (1) visit per week, for thirty (30) minutes each. All visits depend on staff availability and are subject to change; in which case the revised schedule is posted in the housing areas. A maximum of six (6) people, including children may visit at one time. Before a visit can be received the inmate/detainee must have completed a visitors list which may be changed monthly.

All visitors 16 and over must present valid picture identification with a current address. An adult family member or legal guardian must accompany visitors under 18 years of age. No minors (under the age of 18) may be left unattended in the lobby, visitation area or any other area of the facility. All visitors including those in wheelchairs, wearing wigs or wearing religious headgear, will be searched. All visitors must pass through a metal detector in order to maintain the safety and security of the facility, staff and visitors.

Attorneys are permitted to visit at any time during normal business hours, except during meals, counts, and lockdowns. To minimize delays caused by inmate counts, feeding and programs, the following schedule is suggested: Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00

Visitor's Dress Code - In order to provide the best possible visiting experience, a dress code has been established. Clothing must be moderate in appearance and may not be sexually suggestive. Visitors may not wear the following:

  • Sleeveless Shirts, tank tops, halter tops
  • Garments with spaghetti straps, tube tops
  • Fishnet tops, strapless dresses
  • Clothing that is transparent (see-through)
  • Clothing that exposes the midriff, navel or cleavage
  • Spandex pants or other clothing that is not appropriate because of slits, rips or holes

No hats, scarves, caps or any head coverings will be permitted. The only exception is religious head coverings, which will be subject to search. Skirts, dresses and shorts must not exceed six(6) inches above the kneecap. Female visitors must wear a bra. Visitors may be denied access to the visitation area for any dress deemed inappropriate.

Visitor Conduct - Inappropriate language or behavior will not be tolerated and will result in denial of visits. Visitors who appear under the influence or attempt to bring in drugs, alcohol or other unlawful items will be criminally prosecuted. All visitors that are 16 years of age or older must have a picture I.D. A parent or legal guardian must accompany visitors under 18 years of age. Each visitor’s name must be on the inmates vistors list (excluding children under the age of 18). No more than three (3) children shall be allowed to visit at one time. All children under the age of 18 must remain in the immediate vicinity of the parent or legal guardian.
