Most inamtes do their time without ever having to fear for their safety. Others seem to find conflict at every turn. A lot has to do with the type of person that inmate is, are they argumentative, are they mouthy and challenge everything people do? Obviously, the more that the inmate keeps to themselves and is not disrespectful to others, the more peace they will have. The guards in most instances are well trained and have empathy for the offenders they are paid to watch. Our best advice is to keep quiet, don't interrupt others, don't jump into other's conversations, don't butt in line, don't change the TV when others are watching, don't sit on another's bunk without invitation, don't reach across the dining table impeding on another's tray - it's a code of respect that inmates go by and common sense usually is the best guide.
