Yes. Protective custody is not only available to these inmates, in many facilities it is the standard housing arrangement rather than the exception.

Inmates convicted of offenses involving children face significant risk in general population. The inmate code treats crimes against children as the most serious violation of acceptable conduct and the consequences of being known as a child offender in a general population setting can be severe. Facilities are aware of this dynamic and most have developed housing solutions that separate vulnerable inmates from the broader population.

Protective custody removes an inmate from the general population and places them in a separate unit where they are not exposed to the same risks. In many state and federal systems, sex offenders are housed together in dedicated units or facilities rather than being scattered through the general population. This is as much a facility management decision as it is a safety measure, since managing the fallout from attacks on sex offenders in the general population creates significant administrative and legal problems for the institution.

The Prison Rape Elimination Act adds a legal layer to this. PREA requires facilities to assess every incoming inmate for vulnerability to sexual victimization and to take appropriate steps to protect those identified as at risk. Inmates convicted of sex offenses against children are among those most likely to be flagged during that assessment.

Protective custody comes with its own tradeoffs. Access to programming, recreation, work assignments, and social interaction is more limited than in the general population. But for this category of inmate, the safety calculation almost always points toward PC as the right housing placement.
