When an inmate transfers between state facilities, communication does not automatically carry over. Phone lists, visitation lists, and account access all have to be re-established at the new facility, and that process takes time.
At most state facilities, expect one to two weeks before phone and visitation lists are set up and approved. Some facilities move faster, others slower, depending on staffing and the volume of new arrivals they are processing at any given time.
The most reliable way to get a specific timeline is to call the receiving facility directly. Ask to speak with the records office or your family member's assigned case manager and ask about the current timeline for setting up phone and visitation access for new transfers. Having your family member's full name and inmate ID number ready will help them pull up the file quickly.
In the meantime, a letter is the one form of communication that does not require list approval. Sending a letter as soon as you have the confirmed address at the new facility is the fastest way to make contact while the phone access is being set up.
