The honest answer is that you will not know for certain right away and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you. Time is the only real test and your own intuition is a more reliable guide than anything someone says to you through a phone or a letter.

What you can watch for are patterns. Genuine connection tends to be consistent, patient, and not transactional. Someone who is using you tends to escalate requests over time, whether for money, favors, help with legal matters, or involvement in things that do not feel right. If the relationship moves quickly toward need and dependency that is worth paying attention to.

Inmates have a lot of time to think, write, and talk. They can be extraordinarily attentive and emotionally present in ways that feel rare and meaningful. That attention is real in the moment but the circumstances that create it are artificial. A person who writes beautifully from a cell and a person who shows up consistently in everyday life are not always the same person and it is worth holding both possibilities at the same time.

There are genuine love stories that started through prison correspondence. They exist and dismissing that entirely would not be honest. But there are far more stories of people on the outside who gave years of emotional investment and financial support to someone who disappeared or reverted to old patterns the moment the gate opened.

The most protective thing you can do is move slowly, keep your finances completely separate, trust your gut when something feels off, and make sure you have a full life outside of this relationship that does not depend on it for your happiness. Let time and actions, not words, tell you what you need to know.
