Prison visitation has strict rules about what can be brought inside, and they are enforced without much flexibility. Understanding what is and is not permitted before you arrive saves you from a wasted trip or an embarrassing turn-away at the entrance.
The standard across most facilities is that visitors may bring a small amount of change, typically around $20, carried in a clear plastic bag that allows staff to see the contents at a glance. That money is used for vending machines in the visiting area if the facility has them. Beyond that, personal items stay in the car.
Purses are not permitted inside under any circumstances. Wallets, bags, backpacks, and any other carry items follow the same rule. The only exception is the approved clear bag with the permitted change. Your car essentially becomes your storage locker for the duration of the visit. Arriving with a purse or bag means a trip back to the parking lot before you can proceed, which costs time and potentially a portion of your visit window.
Other practical things to know before arriving. Dress code restrictions apply at most facilities. Clothing that resembles inmate attire, typically khaki, tan, orange, or blue depending on the facility, is not permitted. Revealing or overly casual clothing is also commonly restricted. Calling the facility ahead of time to confirm the current dress code is worth the five minutes it takes, particularly if you are traveling a long distance.
