Staying to yourself is not about being antisocial. It is a deliberate strategy for getting through a sentence without unnecessary conflict, and it works. The concept is simple: find a routine, stick to it, keep your head down, and do not give anyone a reason to involve you in their drama.

That said, doing all the right things is not a guarantee. Some people follow every unwritten rule and still end up in a bad situation through no fault of their own. The goal is to minimize the odds, not eliminate all risk.

Here is what staying to yourself actually looks like in practice. Mind your own business, fully and consistently. Do not insert yourself into other people's conversations or disputes. Avoid following the crowd or going along with what others around you are doing just to fit in. Do not ask other inmates what they are in for. That question is considered deeply intrusive and can create immediate hostility. Do not sit on another inmate's bunk without being invited. Do not change the television channel without checking with whoever is watching. Do not cut in line or interrupt conversations. Do not take things personally, and do not make things personal either.

The underlying principle behind all of it is respect for boundaries. Prison is a compressed, high-tension environment where small slights can escalate quickly. The inmates who serve their time smoothly are almost always the ones who treat everyone around them with baseline courtesy, stay focused on what matters to them, and do not create friction.

Find a routine that keeps you occupied and stick to it alone. Education, fitness, reading, a work assignment, whatever it is. That structure is what staying to yourself really means, and it is the clearest path to reaching a release date without complications.
