What if prison won’t provide visitation forms?
My husband is high desert state prison, he has been there since feb 21. He has been asking for a visiting packet and the guards tell him the ran out. How can hdsp be out of forms and the public telephones always be broken especially on mondays. Thank u
That situation is frustrating, but it does happen more than it should. Running out of forms or having phones down is usually a staffing or administrative issue, not a policy.
Visitation is considered important in every facility, so being “out of forms” for an extended time is not normal.
Here is what you can do to move this forward:
1. Contact the facility directly
Call and ask for:
- The visitation department
- The warden’s office or secretary
- The chaplain’s office (they often help with family communication issues)
Explain clearly that your husband has been unable to get a visiting packet.
2. Ask if you can download or request it yourself
Many facilities now:
- Have visitation forms online
- Or can mail/email them directly to you
This can bypass the delay inside.
3. Have your husband keep asking different staff
Sometimes one officer says no, another will help. He should:
- Ask a counselor or case manager
- Check with classification staff
4. About the phones
Phones being down, especially on certain days, is unfortunately common in some facilities. It is usually due to:
- Maintenance issues
- System overload
- Scheduling or internal routines
There is not much control over that from the outside, but once working, things usually return to normal.
Bottom line:
- Being out of forms long term is not acceptable
- You can take action from the outside to speed this up
- There are usually ways to get the paperwork without waiting on staff inside
Push a little from your side. That often gets results faster than waiting on the unit to fix it.
