When can inmates use commissary and send letters?
My husband is in Middleton unit in Abilene he was just transferred there about a week and half ago do you know how long it will be before he can buy anything from commissary or send a letter...also does anyone know how long it will take him to receive a letter through this website.
Since your husband was just transferred to the Middleton Unit, he is likely still going through intake and processing. That can affect both commissary access and communication during the first couple of weeks.
Commissary access:
Inmates can usually shop commissary once a week, but they must:
- Be fully processed into the unit
- Have money in their trust account
At about a week and a half in, he is likely getting close. In many cases, inmates are able to access commissary within the first 1 to 2 weeks after arrival, depending on how quickly processing is completed.
Sending letters:
He can send letters as soon as he has access to stamps and supplies. If he has money, he will buy these through commissary. If he does not, the facility typically provides basic supplies for indigent inmates so they can still write.
Receiving letters from you:
Letters sent through InmateAid are printed and mailed like regular mail. The timeline is:
- About 2 to 3 business days to reach the facility
- Additional time for mailroom processing and delivery
Most facilities deliver mail Monday through Friday, but internal delays can happen depending on volume and procedures.
What to expect:
Early on, everything feels slow because of intake. Once he is fully processed, things usually fall into a routine:
- Weekly commissary
- Regular mail delivery
- Easier communication
You are right at that transition point now, so you should start seeing things open up for him very soon.
