Book deliveries get refused at the mail room for several reasons, and knowing which one applies helps you avoid the same problem on the next order.
Third-party seller. This is the most common reason. If you ordered through Amazon but the item shipped from a third-party seller rather than directly from Amazon, the facility rejected it because it did not come from a recognized publisher or approved retailer. The shipment has to originate from Amazon itself or another approved vendor, not an individual seller using the Amazon marketplace. Always check that the listing says sold and fulfilled by Amazon before ordering.
Facility's approved vendor list. Some facilities maintain a specific list of approved vendors and will not accept books from any source not on that list, even if it is a legitimate retailer. Check with the specific facility before ordering from any new source.
Hardcover restrictions. Many facilities only accept paperback books. Hardcovers can be used to conceal contraband and are prohibited at most correctional institutions. If you sent a hardcover, that may be the reason.
Content restrictions. Facilities can reject books based on content. Material deemed to contain sexually explicit content, instructions for illegal activity, or content related to security threats will not be accepted regardless of where it came from.
Inmate property limits. If your inmate has reached the maximum number of books allowed in their cell, additional books may be refused until space is made through donation to the prison library.
Wrong address or ID number. If the shipping label had an incorrect inmate ID or facility address, the mail room may have been unable to identify the recipient and returned the package.
Contact the facility's mail room directly to find out the specific reason for the refusal, then correct the issue before reordering.
