Maine was the first state to abolish parole, doing so roughly 50 years ago, and remains one of 16 states without such a system today. That history makes this one of the most persistent questions families of Maine inmates ask, and the honest answer as of April 2026 is that parole has not been reinstated, and the most recent legislative effort to bring it back just failed.

The latest bill to restore parole in Maine failed to gain the support of the Judiciary Committee in February 2026, with its main sponsor acknowledging defeat. Following the latest defeat at the statehouse, advocates believe the ballot box may be the best avenue to bring parole back.

Since parole was abolished 50 years ago, sentences in Maine have gotten 20% longer, the state's prison population has tripled to about 2,000, and about 15% of incarcerated people are now over the age of 50. Those statistics are central to the reform argument, alongside the financial cost of housing an aging population.

Research shows that people released to parole have lower recidivism rates than peers who served out full sentences in prison. Advocates continue to make this case, and the issue is not going away. But for Maine inmates and their families right now, the system remains what it has been since 1976: sentences are served without parole eligibility, and release comes when the sentence calculation is complete.
