Bernalillo County
City Jail

The Albuquerque Regional Detention Center is classified as city jail, located in Albuquerque, NM. The security for this prison is medium as its standards are created similar to maximum security without the tower structures. This facility handles most of the small towns in and around the Bernalillo County area. The building is solid concrete with limited access to fresh air, with heavy guard-to-inmate ratios. Corrections Officers are directly r esponsible for the care and custody of incarcerated offenders. Their duties include booking and classification, movement of prisoners between jail and courts, transportation to and from alternate holding facilities, supervision of laundry and meal preparation, monitoring visitations, supervision of offender work crews, accounting for prisoner property and funds, and tracking prisoner time served. There are adjacent cage-like structures that inmates may use to get some limited exercise (basketball hoop and dip bars) for an hour of recreation every other day. Most of the time spent is in their pod or 2-man cells. Movements are strictly supervised. There is a library, a commissary, a gym, a barber shop and a chapel. The inmates are all awaiting immigration, sentencing, trial or transfer; there are no long term inmates. This relatively small city jail is used by the police departments in this area to confine inmates for short periods while awaiting trial or processing. As inmates are staying for only a short period, it has fewer amenities than a jail or prison. Inmates do, however, have access to bathroom facilities and are provided with meals during their stay. Visitation is often non-contact through protective glass. Many inmate detainees are delivered daily on minor misdemeanor charges like drunk or high, or with injuries from fights or assaults that led to their arrest. Some are mentally ill with no other place for the local police to place them. Some may stay less than one day or a few days, until they are released in a court proceeding after putting up bail or on their own recognizance promising to return for their court dates. This city jail is designed in "pods" with a large common area where the tables are affixed to the floor along with attached seats. There are individual cells usually on two levels. Most of the time all inmates must remain in their cells. However there are times where the inmates area allowed in the pod playing games, eating or watching television. The inmates do not leave the pod unless they are going to the commissary, the library or the recreation area, under supervision. The city jail is considered a less stressful environment than prison.
