Ashe County NC Detention Center is for County Jail offenders sentenced up to twenty four months.

All prisons and jails have Security or Custody levels depending on the inmate’s classification, sentence, and criminal history. Please review the rules and regulations for County - medium facility.

The Ashe County NC Detention Center is a detention center located at 140 Government Circle Jefferson, NC which is operated locally by the Ashe County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Ashe County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Jefferson Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for North Carolina here.

Inmates held in the Ashe County Detention Center may be contacted either by mail or by phone.

Inmate Mail

Mail service is provided by the US Postal Service. All incoming mail is searched by jail staff and is subject to refusal. Mail may consist of letters or money orders only (see money order information below). Inmates may only recieve plain paper items (no photos). Jail staff allows for inmates to receive greeting cards. The greeting card may not contain any mechanical sound or device and should be of plain card greeting card stock.

Inmate Phone Service

Inmates are offered phone services through PayTel Communicaitons. Inmates may purchase $10 (ten dollar) phone cards from jail staff or a PayTel account may be established by friends or family.

Inmate Funds

Inmate funds are accepted for deposit into a commissary account. Funds may be deposited by three different methods.

Method 1 - Inmates may have family or friends utilize the kiosk in the visitation lobby.

a. Family and Friends must have the inmate ID number

b. The kiosk accepts Cash, Credit and Debit Cards

c. Cash is only accepted in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 dollar bills

d. Funds are posted real time to the inmate's account

e. There is a $2.75 fee to utilize the Kiosk per transaction up to $300/transaction

f. Hours of Operation are 24/7

g. Current Inmate numbers are listed on the side of the kiosk

Method 2 - Inmates may have friends and family send money via Government Payments Services (GPS)
a. Family and friends must have the inmate ID number and name of the facility
Facility - Ashe County Sheriff's Office and the three letter code is GEV
b. GPS accepts Credit and Debit cards only
c. Funds are posted immediately to the inmate's account

e. Pay Location Code is 5500

Method 3 - Inmate may have family and friends send money in the mail.
a. We only accept Postal Money Orders

b. Money Orders must arrive at least one business day prior to commissary to be available to the inmate.
c. The sender's name, return address and the Inmate's ID number must be on the money order.
d. The sender's name and return address must be on the envelope
e. The money order must be made payable to the inmate

Visitation Information

Ashe County Detention Center utilizes video visitation for all inmates. Inmates will be allowed two (2) - fifteen (15) minute visits each unless the facility is overcrowded.
