Miramonte Camp #5 is a minimum-security facility under CDCR supervision, this camp plays a crucial role in supporting government agencies during emergency responses to wildfires, floods, and other natural or man-made disasters. Additionally, camp crews contribute to park maintenance, assist with flood mitigation through sandbagging, and participate in reforestation projects. Participation in the Conservation (Fire) Camp Program is entirely voluntary for incarcerated individuals. Those who choose to volunteer must meet specific eligibility criteria aimed at ensuring public safety. These include avenues for criminal record expungement, creating new pathways for employment, and aiding in their successful reintegration into society.
Miramonte Conservation Camp #5, operated by CAL FIRE, stands as a crucial asset in providing support to local, state, and federal agencies during emergencies like fires and floods. Since its establishment in 1949, Miramonte has been dedicated to fire protection and community service in the Fresno and Kings County area, leaving a positive impact on the surrounding communities.
Nestled just outside Sequoia National Forest at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet, Miramonte is situated in the oak-studded foothills, offering a picturesque and secluded setting for its operations. Over the years, the camp has been instrumental in various community service projects, including the construction of rock walls, stairs, water culverts, and other infrastructure, leaving lasting impressions on the landscape and memories of the "red buses" and inmates working diligently in the community.
Miramonte's four work crews engage in a diverse range of community service projects each year, collaborating with organizations such as the Bureau of Reclamation, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Forest Service, California State Parks and Recreation, and CAL FIRE. These projects encompass tasks like litter removal along highways, maintenance of campgrounds and fish hatcheries, and support for local fire stations.
Originally designed to operate various shops producing goods like welding projects, carpentry products, and auto body and paint services, Miramonte now focuses on its Welding and Carpentry shops. These shops continue to produce essential items such as wooden cabinets, signs, and basic welding projects, while also undertaking repairs for wooden and metal signs used by CAL FIRE and the U.S. Forest Service in the region.
Through its unwavering commitment to fire protection, community service, and skill development, Miramonte Conservation Camp remains a vital resource in safeguarding the Fresno and Kings County area and enhancing the well-being of surrounding communities.
