WSP is a 1,000-bed medium custody state facility operated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). It serves a critical role as a reception center, intake facility, and diagnostic center for incoming inmates, supporting the broader 4,580-bed reception center on-site.

During the intake process, inmates undergo comprehensive evaluations, including mental, physical, and criminal history assessments. These evaluations inform the determination of security requirements and identify any necessary programs or interventions for individual inmates. Depending on various factors, such as the length of the reception process and program needs, inmates may spend anywhere from a week to 90 days at Wasco before being assigned to a permanent facility.

The institution also operates a Fire Department staffed by inmate firefighters and offers youth diversion programs, religious services, and family reunification support through a Family Liaison Service Specialist. Through partnerships with community-based organizations, Wasco State Prison strives to address the holistic needs of inmates and promote positive outcomes both during and after incarceration.

Inmate Locator

WSP maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.

If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
