The Chelan County Juvenile Detention Facility is a medium to low-security detention center located at 316 Washington St, Ste 202 Wenatchee, WA that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.

The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.

Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.

Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.

The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.

The Chelan County Juvenile Center is a county agency dedicated to providing juvenile detention, probation, and court services. It handles all criminal cases involving children aged eight to 18, screening and scheduling them for court hearings or diversion programs. Law enforcement may bring youth to detention following an arrest for a crime or on a warrant. Each juvenile offender is assigned a probation counselor who collaborates with the youth and their family to ensure compliance with court orders and to provide treatment and other services aimed at reducing recidivism. Additionally, Juvenile Center staff assist parents and school officials with truancy and at-risk youth petitions.

Administration
The Juvenile Court operates as a division of the Chelan County Superior Court. The Juvenile Court administrator is appointed by and reports to the Superior Court judges. The Board of Chelan County Commissioners funds the operation of the Juvenile Center, with additional revenue from state and federal governments helping to offset costs.

Employment
The Chelan County Juvenile Center employs 34 full-time staff members, supplemented by part-time relief workers who provide temporary staffing in detention. Classification descriptions for juvenile probation counselor, juvenile custody officer, and administrative support positions are available at the main office. Information on how to apply for open positions can be found under Career Opportunities on the Center's website or in the Wenatchee World.
