Located at 9544 County Rd 476B in Bushnell, FL, Sumter CI carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Sumter CI offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

Sumter Correctional Institution, situated in Bushnell, Florida, stands as a significant facility within the Florida Department of Corrections' framework, providing housing for adult men and youthful offenders. Operating under various security levels, including minimum, medium, and close custody, Sumter Correctional Institution has been serving its role since its establishment in 1965. With a maximum capacity of 1,551 prisoners, it accommodates a diverse population of inmates.

One notable aspect of Sumter Correctional Institution is its distinction as the location of the state's only Basic Training Unit for Youthful Offenders within the Department of Corrections. This unit offers a rigorous 120-day program consisting of drill practice, education, physical training, and a highly regimented daily schedule. Upon completing the program, inmates are released to serve the remainder of their sentence on probation, marking a unique approach to rehabilitation and reintegration for youthful offenders.

The institution also provides a wide range of academic and vocational programs aimed at equipping inmates with essential skills for their successful transition back into society. Academic offerings include Adult Basic Education, Basic Literacy, Correspondence Courses, and GED preparation, while vocational programs cover areas such as Administrative Office Assistant, Energy Technician, and Horticulture/Landscape Management.

Chaplaincy Services at Sumter Correctional Institution play a crucial role in providing spiritual guidance and support to inmates through Chapel Library Services, Eternal Life Concept, Goal Setting/Life Skills, Gospel Echoes, Kairos, Parenting/Family programs, and Worship and Praise sessions.

Institutional Betterment Programs focus on promoting personal growth and rehabilitation, with initiatives such as Faith & Character Dorm, Peer to Peer support, Re-Entry Programs, AA/NA meetings, Compass 180 transition program, D.I.R.E.C.T. Program, Drug Awareness and Dependency sessions, F.I.T. Anger Management, Gavel Club, Life Skills workshops, Marriage & Family Counseling, Veterans Program, and Wellness Education through the Wellness Center.

Despite its efforts towards rehabilitation, Sumter Correctional Institution faced challenges, such as the federal lawsuit triggered by an alleged sexual assault against a 17-year-old inmate by six other prisoners in July 2013. Such incidents underscore the ongoing need for vigilance and improvement within the correctional system to ensure the safety and well-being of all inmates.
