The Grand Traverse Co Jail is a detention center located at 320 Washington St Traverse City, MI which is operated locally by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Grand Traverse County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Traverse City Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Michigan here.

Guidelines - Facility operations will be consistent with guidelines established by the State of Michigan, Federal Bureau of Prisons and consideration to standards established by recognized authorities, corrections organizations including the ACA (American Correctional Association) and the NCCHC (National Correctional Healthcare).
Corrections Services - In addition to the basic correctional functions of custody, security, and supervision of the daily activities of an inmate population, Corrections staff are specialized in Court Services, providing bailiffs and security to all Grand Traverse County Courts. Jail staff facilitate all long-distance state transports, delivering sentenced offenders to the Michigan Department of Corrections, picking up subjects arrested on local warrants or court orders.
Inmate Calls - Inmate phone service through Securus. FIfteen-minute calls are $12.92. With an InmateAid number we can get the same 15-minute call for $3.15 (save $9.77 per call). Click here to check it out.
Jail Records - Jail records provide a wealth of information shared with law enforcement agencies, accessible through computer databases nationwide. Additionally, local, state and national statistics are partially supported by information obtained through the intake process.

Inmate Program Opportunities

The Grand Traverse Area is very fortunate to have many valuable resources and volunteers to contribute to the positive reinforcement of the inmate population. In addition, the programs offered to facility occupants are locally available, increasing the likelihood of successful reentry upon release from jail.

GED - In years past, one of our most valuable offerings has been the GED Program. Many inmates have fulfilled this requirement, gaining their High School Equivalency Diploma, ultimately leading to better employment and further educational opportunities. Unfortunately - due to budget cuts, we have been unable to fund this program since 2011. We are researching alternate sources for funding.

Specialized Courts - These program opportunities may also be represented in our local specialized courts, again adding to reinforce support for the inmate. The 86th District Court currently has in place, Sobriety Court, Domestic Violence Court, and Mental Health Court.
