The Iowa County IA Jail is a detention center located at 960 Franklyn Ave Marengo, IA which is operated locally by the Iowa County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Iowa County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Marengo Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. When an offender is sentenced to serve time in the Iowa County Jail - Iowa Co. charge (mittimus), he/she may be required to pay for the jail stay. The normal fee that an offender is required to pay is $20 a day if the offender serves the mittimus either directly from the court or by scheduling the time to serve all at once. If the offender decides to schedule the time to serve on a weekend or is accommodating a work schedule, etc they will be charged a rate of $40 a day. If the offender was sentenced by another county and would like to serve the time at the Iowa County Correctional facility they will be required to pay $50 a day, with the whole amount being required the day they begin to serve the sentence.

Detainees with funds may write to you as often as they wish. Indigent detainees may write up to two (2) personal letters each week free of charge. Please be aware that anytime an indigent detainee receives funds, those funds are subject to collection for indigent free services. The detainee may view and read certain items but may be required to keep the item(s) in their personal property. Such items may be and are not limited to the greeting cards, pictures, postcards, any item containing or bearing stickers, and other items considered contraband. Polaroid pictures or pictures deemed inappropriate in nature will be placed in the detainee’s property. Personal checks of any kind are not accepted. The preferred method of sending detainee money is either by money order or cashier’s check. Although cash is not recommended, the jail does accept it. Located at the jail is a reverse ATM that the inmates family and friends can use to put money on an inmates account. This machine accepts Cash or credit cards. For Cash transactions, there is a $2.00 fee. For Credit/Debit card transactions there is a 10% of total amount fee. You can also put money on an inmates account over the internet by going to www.jailATM.com.

Work Release Program

I. Generally, only Iowa County sentenced prisoners are eligible.

II. Serious consideration will not be given to a prisoner for work release until it is certain the prisoner will be incarcerated. The prisoner may be observed for a period of time while incarcerated to assure that all rules and regulations will be followed and opinion of the prisoner’s general attitude can be evaluated. There may be a time period of up to one week from the time the prisoner is first incarcerated until work release is granted to allow this office to investigate the prisoner’s qualifications for the program and to assure proper supervision.

III. Prisoners must sign an agreement with the Sheriff or his designee that may include but is not limited to the following: place of employment, supervisors and telephone number, hours of work, route to and from work, breath and/or urine testing, meals, contraband, searches, contract with law enforcement, escape and suspension of work release program.

IV. Any work release program must have the written approval of the sentencing judge.

V. Employers may pay by check with documented hours, payable to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office. Costs are $30.00 per day of work release or half of the prisoner’s net wages, as defined in Iowa Code section 356.30, whichever is less. In addition, work release inmates shall pay a charge of $30.00 per day for each day incarcerated while not on actual work release. Jail costs shall be paid one week in advance. Prisoners serving sentences for offenses outside of Iowa County shall pay $50.00 per day whether on work release or not.

VI. Hours worked shall remain constant, with overtime approved only if extraordinary circumstances exist. A work schedule shall be prepared by the employer and must be approved by the Sheriff.

An inmate on work release is not eligible for Good Time. Any of the above-stated policies or parts of policies may be waived by the Sheriff or his designee if it is felt that the waiver would be in the best interest of the prisoner and the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office.

Prisoners sentenced to accommodate their work schedule who are paying work release fees shall not be charged the daily administrative / room and board fee(356.7).

Visitation Information

Iowa County IA Jail IA - Visitation

Visiting Days:

  • Tuesdays 9:00am – 10:00am Register until 10:00am
  • Saturdays 1:00pm – 3:00pm Register until 3:00pm

Sundays are reserved for religious visits only by preauthorized individuals.

Inmates in good standing may have 2 general visitations on visitation days not including attorney or clergy visits. Visits may last up to 20 minutes. Inmates will not be allowed more than 40 minutes total visitation on any one day, not including attorney or clergy visits. There shall be no more than three (3) visitors at a time. Children may visit when accompanied by an adult who is considered their parent or legal guardian. Any person under 18 years of age is classified as a child.

The Sheriff or his designee retains the right to deny a visit when it is believed that the visit will endanger jail security or control. The visitation guard staff will evaluate the visitor and inmate’s conduct during the visit. This information will be utilized for current and future visitation. Visitors and inmates are expected to adhere to a code of behavior which is decent and non-offensive to other visitors, inmates and staff.

Visitors are not allowed to move about the room or visit more than one (1) inmate per visit.

Visitors will not tamper with or alter any animate or inanimate object in the visitor’s room.

Visitors must sign a visitor registration form before being allowed to visit an inmate. This form will include the visitor’s name, reason, relationship, complete address and inmate’s name.

Inmates shall be denied visitation unless visitor consents to search upon request, based on probable cause. Two forms of ID may be necessary. A photo ID is required.

A visit in progress may be terminated at any time for security reasons by jail staff. Any variation of the visitation policy shall be cleared by the Sheriff or his designee.
