The NHRJC is a low/medium-security detention center located at 3830 Juvenile Center Rd Castle Hayne, NC which is operated locally by the New Hanover Regional Authority and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates have been here for less than five years. NHRJC accepts inmates from the New Hanover County Sheriff's arrests and surrounding towns, Castle Hayne Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for North Carolina here.
Juvenile detention centers are temporary, secure facilities where juveniles await court proceedings or placement arrangements. They are placed in detention by court order pending hearing, disposition, or placement, with frequent court appearances to review the need for continued custody. These centers, usually located close to the juvenile's home county, receive admissions through assigned regions or catchment areas.
In cases where juveniles are tried as adults in Superior Court, they remain in juvenile detention pending trial if not released on bond. These centers offer tailored services and programs to address individual needs, aiming to foster positive behavioral change and development. Ensuring a safe, secure, and humane environment for both juveniles and staff is paramount, with co-ed facilities staffed by same-sex personnel for appropriate oversight.
Upon admission, each youth undergoes a mental health screening, followed by more comprehensive assessments if needed, including substance abuse evaluations. Medical screenings are also conducted, with urgent medical services provided as necessary, enabling the Division to better serve the youth in its care.
Basic educational services aligned with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction's curriculum are provided during the juveniles' short-term stays. Treatment programming and services offered vary across detention centers to meet the diverse needs of the youth, aiming to facilitate their rehabilitation and eventual successful reintegration into society.

Visits to NCDPS offenders are by appointment only. Call the prison where the offender is housed to schedule an appointment. Visitors should call the prison the day before a scheduled visit to confirm the facility's visitation status. Also, video visitation now is available at most but not all prisons, so family and friends may be able to do a virtual visit if they prefer. Call the prison for additional information on video visitation at the facility.
Visitation by family and friends is encouraged and can make a positive difference during an offender's time in prison. Prison staff understand the importance of offenders maintaining contact with their family and friends. However, offenders can not be assigned to specific facilities within the prison system for the convenience of visitation.
