EJSP, the state's second-oldest institution, accommodates approximately 1,500 adult male offenders in Rahway, Middlesex County. Known for its distinctive large dome and imposing front gates, EJSP has served as a backdrop for numerous films and shows. Originally called Rahway State Prison, the facility's name was officially changed to East Jersey State Prison in 1988, although it remains commonly referred to as Rahway State Prison.

EJSP offers maximum, medium, and minimum security programs tailored to the needs of its inmate population. Inmates have access to vocational courses covering automotive repair, autobody repair, horticulture, culinary arts, and painting. Additionally, educational opportunities include adult basic education, GED programs, and college courses provided by Union County College. Notably, EJSP was the site of the original "Scared Straight!" program, where inmates sentenced to life aimed to deter young delinquents by sharing their experiences.
