The United States Penitentiary, Canaan (USP Canaan), situated in northeastern Pennsylvania, is a high-security federal prison with a satellite prison camp for minimum-security male inmates. Managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the facility, which opened in March 2005 is designed to house 1275 male inmates in six housing units. Six V-shaped buildings face each other and a larger maintenance building surrounds a central yard with a tower in the middle. Six additional towers are lined along the rectangular-shaped facility. The facility is surrounded by a lethal electrical double fence. The administrative and disciplinary unit, known as the Special Housing Unit, can accommodate around 250 inmates. Cells in the disciplinary unit feature showers and house two inmates. The camp is adjacent to the USP but with no fences in a relaxed, bucolic setting.

Inmates adhere to a strict schedule, including multiple daily counts and work movements, with set times for cell occupancy and recreational activities. Despite the regimented routine, prisoners have access to communication services such as text-based email through Corrlinks and limited phone privileges. Inmates may shop for some little extras at the Commissary, a list and prices of items sold at USP Canaan.

Health services at USP Canaan encompass preventative care, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, and emergency services, with 24-hour availability for emergencies. Similarly, psychology services offer intake screenings, crisis intervention, and support programs, including anger management.

The prison hosts various educational programs, including literacy, GED, and ESL courses, along with vocational training in fields like horticulture and apprenticeships in electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. Inmates also have access to library services and recreational activities supervised by the Recreation Department, promoting physical fitness and mental well-being.

USP Canaan's comprehensive approach to inmate rehabilitation extends to its Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), Drug Education class, and support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These initiatives, along with education and vocational training, aim to facilitate successful reintegration into society and reduce recidivism rates.
