Located at 1200 Farm Rd in Halifax, VA, Halifax Correctional carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Halifax Correctional offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Halifax Correctional Unit, a level 1 minimum security facility overseen by the Virginia Department of Corrections, accommodates up to 248 male inmates. The facility comprises eight housing units and a segregation unit, with the visiting and education annex situated adjacent to the main complex. While segregation inmates are housed in cells, the general population resides in open dormitories.

Operating a textile industry employing 48 inmates, Halifax Correctional Unit manufactures clothing and sheets. Additionally, the facility hosts three large greenhouses and a crop field spanning over ten acres. An agriculture meat production operation allows inmates to work with Boer Goats.

Educational opportunities at Halifax include GED classes and quarterly testing, complemented by medical, dental, and mental health services. The facility offers the MATRIX substance abuse treatment program and pre-release programming to facilitate inmates' transition back into society.

Aligned with the Virginia Department of Corrections' framework, Halifax provides core programs such as inmate work activities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and life skills programming. Substance abuse programming targets approximately 80% of inmates with a history of substance abuse, emphasizing intensive treatment in Therapeutic Community programs.

Moreover, Halifax and other Virginia prisons offer education programs addressing the health, social, and legal consequences of substance abuse. Additional support includes Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous programs, alongside counseling and substance abuse recovery groups. The prison system's holistic approach aims to promote positive growth and reduce recidivism rates among inmates.

Visitation Information

Apply for Visitation - Submit a visitation application online if you are a new visitor or renewing your visitation privileges.

Schedule a Visit - Once you receive approval to visit an inmate in a VADOC facility, you must schedule your visit online using the Visitation Scheduler. If you are a new user, you must first register using the “Register Today” option.

Prepare for Your Scheduled Visit - Once you have both applied for visitation and scheduled your visit, please review the following information to help you prepare for your in-person visit.

Plan - Please arrive at the facility one hour before your visit for security screening. No food or drinks will be allowed in the facility, and there will be no access to vending machines.
