The Wise Correctional Unit, located in Coeburn VA, is a low-custody state facility comprising two dorms, two special housing units, and various essential facilities such as a kitchen, dining hall, and laundry facility. It accommodates up to 116 general population inmates and includes four special housing beds. Inmates typically have free roam of most areas during the day and are employed either within the unit or in nearby facilities.

The unit operates a large farm with an apple orchard and greenhouses for growing vegetables using hydroponics. The produce sustains the facility, with surplus sold to supplement the budget. Inmates can work on the farm or with the Department of Transportation on roadways, contributing to their rehabilitation and skill development. Notably, the Wise CU is regarded favorably among inmates and auditors as a relatively positive environment for incarceration.

Rated as a Security Level 1 High facility, Wise CU has specific assignment criteria and specifications. It opened in 1964 and currently maintains an average daily population of around 108 inmates. The facility offers various programs and services aligned with the Virginia state prison system's objective of constructive inmate engagement and reducing unrest.

Treatment planning is a fundamental aspect of the inmate's journey, involving assessments to determine security and treatment needs upon admission. Core programs such as inmate work activities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and life skills programming are provided to support positive growth and rehabilitation.

Substance abuse programming, including Therapeutic Community (TC) programs, addresses the prevalent issue of substance abuse among inmates. These programs are proven to reduce recidivism rates when paired with community follow-up services. Additionally, education programs, support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and counseling sessions are available across prison facilities to facilitate inmate rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Each facility also offers specialized programs tailored to meet specific inmate needs, ensuring a comprehensive approach to inmate care and rehabilitation.
